Wines of Austria

The country of Austria has a much warmer climate than neighboring Germany and is able to ripen grapes more easily.  The wines produced are mostly dry white wines.  The primary grapes used are Geuener Veltliner and Riesling.  Little or no oak is used for fermenting or aging wines in Austria.

Most grapes in Austria are grown in the eastern half of the country.  Grape growing is concentrated along the major rivers (i.e. - Danube).  Among the major wine producing areas are:  Wachau which grows primarily Riesling and Greuener Veltliner, Wien which also produces primarily Riesling and Greuener Veltliner and Burgenland, which is the warmest and most humid area, where production includes Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris as well as some red wine and dessert wines.

Styria is the most southern wine producing region.  It produces wines of good quality from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.  Chardonnay is known locally of Morillon.
