Grace Family Vineyards
Saint Helena, Napa Valley, California
The Grace Family Vineyards is a very small Napa Valley winery focused on extreme quality. It is one of the most unique wineries in existence due to it's owner. Dick Grace contributes all the profits from the winery to charity. The wine is sold entirely through the winery's mailing list of about 450 members or through sales for charity auctions. The mailing list has a waiting list of several thousand hopefuls. Grace has adopted many Buddist beliefs and tries to use the winery and its profits to "heal the planet".
Location: Saint Helena, Napa Valley, California.
Vineyards: The first vineyard planting of 1 acre was on the property in front of the Grace's home. It was densely planted for the time with 1100 vines instead of the normal 560. There was a second one-acre vineyard planted on the same property in 1985 and a third acre planted on a neighbor's property in 1998. The original vineyard was replanted after the 1994 harvest due to continuing problems with Oak Root Fungus. The vineyard was replanted with 3465 vines per acre.
Grape variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Production of the 2000 vintage was 11 barrels of wine.

History: Jim Grace and his wife Ann purchased a house and 3.5 acres on Rockland Road in 1875. At that time there were no vineyards, just a small olive grove. The vineyard replaced the olive grove and the first grapes were picked in 1978. From 1978 until 1983, the grapes were sold under contract to Caymus Vineyards and bottled under the Caymus brand as a separate bottling. Since 1983, the grapes have been made into wine and sold by Grace.

Style: The Cabernets from Grace are very complex wines with rather exotic aromas and with rich concentrated flavors. The wines have a very long multi-faceted finish. Some reviewers have described them as being similar to an excellent Margaux.
Visits: Grace Family Vineyards is not open to the public.
