Grape growing and wine production in Hungary date back to the times of the Romans. By the time of the middle-ages, there was a thriving wine industry.
Hungary's most famous wine, Tokaii Aszu, found favor in the 1500s. It is a sweet wine produced from the Aszu grape variety and made in the Tokaj region of the country.
In 1882, the vineyards in Hungary suffered the same problems with phylloxera that plagued France a few years earlier. Phyloxera devastated roughly half of the vineyards.
