Grape
growing and wine production in Hungary date back to the times
of the Romans. By the time of the middle-ages, there was a thriving
wine industry. |
Hungary's
most famous wine, Tokaii Aszu, found favor in the 1500s. It
is a sweet wine produced from the Aszu grape variety and made
in the Tokaj region of the country. |
In
1882, the vineyards in Hungary suffered the same problems with
phylloxera that plagued France a few years earlier. Phyloxera
devastated roughly half of the vineyards. |
