World Comparison

World wine production
 World wine production increased by 7.5% in 1996 reversing a 10-year decline. The leading wine producing countries, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal all saw production increases in 1996 while Germany and Argentina showed a decrease.

World vineyard area
The OIV reports that worldwide the area of vines has stabalised after gradually declining since 1980. In Europe the area under vines has declined in Italy, France, Moldavia and Portugal but has increased in Romania. The vineyard area in the United States, Argentina and Chile aslo increased. The increase in planting in Australia means it now has the 24th largest area under vines.

World wine exports
The world’s number one wine exporter, Italy, exports more than 10 times as much wine as Australia which is now the world’s 11th largest exporter.

World wine consumption
World wine consumption has gradually dropped since 1980 but stabilised in 1995 and showed a slight recovery in 1996. The top four wine consuming nations, France, Italy, USA and Germany consume about half of the world's wine. French and Italian consumers have been reducing their consumption since 1985. Italy is the leading wine consuming nation by volume, but France is the leader per capita at 60 L.
