The 847 wineries and
4,400 wine grape growers in California produce more than 2.6
billion bottles of wine with a $12.3 billion dollar retail value
according to an MFK Research report that was commissioned by
the Wine Institute and the California Grape Growers Association.

|
|
California is responsible
for 91% of all wine produced in the United States and 72% of
all wine sold in the U.S.A. There are 427,000 acres of
land planted to the wine grape varieties.

|
|
The number of wineries in the state
is a bit confusing since the BATF
listed 1056 winery licenses in the state of California in 1999.
Not all of these are physical wineries, though. Many wine
companies will produce more than one brand of wines in the same
facility. There are 847 actual wineries in the state.
